A neighborhood that sits just northwest of North Park, often overlooked is University Heights. A cute little area that has charm and peacefulness, hard to find in the city. University Heights actually is one of the oldest towns in San Diego and was home to the original San Diego State University site. Now it’s home to some of the best restaurants and bars in the area, as well as classic craftsman homes filled with charm. Park Blvd. is the stretch where you’ll find the action and the iconic University Heights sign. I want to take you on a bit of a neighborhood tour and showcase some of my favorite local spots!

Madison on Park

Probably one of the most notable spots in University Heights is Madison on Park. Great atmosphere, delicious craft cocktails, and drool-worthy food. Get the watermelon stack and pork chop, you won’t be disappointed.

Bahn Thai

Arguably the most popular Thai spots in San Diego and it calls University Heights home. Their pad thai is 👌. There isn’t much seating so it’s more of a grab-and-go situation. My recommendation? Pick up a few things and head down the street to Trolley Barn Park.

Trolley Barn Park

This charming little park is nestled off of Adams and makes a perfect spot for a great picnic in the park. It’s usually not too crowded and has a playground for the kiddos. Pre-pandemic they had a summer concert series and I’m hoping they bring it back soon!

Kairoa Brewing

Looking for a rooftop to lounge, grab some apps, and have a few too many drinks on a sunny San Diego afternoon? This is the spot. It’s so relaxing and has a bit of a view of the neighborhood. If you’re like me and not a beer drinker, don’t worry… they carry wine!

Stella Jean’s Ice Cream

Who doesn’t love a sweet treat? Stella Jean’s is an absolute hidden gem and has some very delicious ice cream. Their flavors range from Ube + Pandesal to Matcha Pistachio - so yummy! You can order at the counter, grab a cone and go for a nice, relaxing stroll through the neighborhood.

Clos Wine Shop

This quaint wine shop is a place to grab a glass (or bottle) to enjoy with another and unwind. Clos specializes in carrying organic & biodynamic wines to sip there or bring to your next dinner party.

Eden Plant Shop

I’ve been here a lot lately searching for my next plant baby to bring home. They expanded into the space next door, even more room to browse! The staff is incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. They even offer replanting and rehabilitation services for the ones you can’t seem to keep thriving.

Park & Rec

The neighborhood has a few great bars and Park & Rec is one of them. It has a bar in the front, a bar in the back, and a courtyard in between filled with yard games. It has a mix of three different vibes with the front bar giving a more classic bar vibe, room to interact and play games with your group in the courtyard and live music with dancing at the back bar.

There are many more incredible spots that call University Heights home but I had to narrow down to just eight places on this tour. I hope you get the chance to explore and try some of the places on this list soon. This is also one of those neighborhoods that are flying under the radar when it comes to real estate. If you’re interested in buying or selling a home in University Heights, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Enjoy and cheers!
